SMC-MUN: Being an Egyptian

United Nations

Whenever I come across the word, It has meant power and magnificence to me. With its monumental presence in neighborhood of Manhattan, besides East river, I could see what happens inside only in a translucent light.

But an appetite to know more about my world, its people and their problems pushed me to go for Model United Nations held at Stella Maris, Chennai. Luckily I was selected as a delegate of GA (General Assembly) to represent Egypt. I was perplexed initially, as I wasn’t aware enough of the affairs of Egypt. As always, the World Wide Web gave me a helping hand and I started out to become an Egyptian.

As a delegate of Egypt, I was present in model united nations (MUN). When I was still in the awe of being at Stella for the first time, I couldn’t arrest myself from the amazement of watching my fellow delegates!!

Students were flowing from all over the nation, making Stella bustling. The ease, with which some people carried themselves, clearly indicated that they aren’t there in MUN for the first time. After the orientation, MUN kicked off with its delegates energized enough for their diplomatic war.

To be simple, in GA we spoke on World Hunger. Every nation has to present its stand, and debate over its definition, causes, effects and solutions. We may have a good expertise in debating with our friends on most issues. But given the role of the delegate( the representative of the nation) , one should consider their country’s scenario, its foreign policies, friendly-nations, accuracy of the factual data one presents, the task ahead of you is daunting !!

On the first day, it was a learning experience for the first timers. I was glad, when I spoke for Egypt on the first day!! Time flew by and resolutions were passed. During our second resolution, I completely understood the vitality of majority. The resolution prepared by African Union failed by want of single vote. It was then I realized why the UPA govt. was charged for bribing the BJP M.P, to vote in favor of The Nuclear bill.

The crisis situation which was brought about absolutely thrilled me.

Africa under siege. Mexico in anarchy. China attacked. Barack Obama assassinated and Columbian pop singer Shakira died in a bomb blast in US, conspired by china. To be short, Third world war is to start.

When everyone were amazed, dumbfound and terrified, the Columbian delegate asked his Chinese counterpart, to dance for any Shakira’s song to mourn her demise and to enable her soul to rest in peace. When they did dance for ‘Waka Waka’, the whole assembly blew out in laughter which is beyond words!!

Third day was more formal and we ended the session by debating on the role of donor nations in WFP. The other interesting happening was describing each delegate in a single word, where I was named the lively one!!!

These three days really did have a profound effect in my persona.

I was glad that my first public speaking went good, but also, had a chance to assess myself with students of our age. I felt embarrassed when I came o know how bad I’m in geography, by admitting that Ecuador is in Africa, when it’s really in America!! It gave a chance for me to wonder how good people are in expressing themselves. I was really spellbound by the accent of our Chair ( Suryadeep Seal) and the commanding prowess and impeccable English of our Director ( Rasika Venkat).

With so many new friends, my first MUN gave me an experience cherishing enough, filled with enduring memories!! Teeming with confidence, I’m yearning for my next MUN!!!

A meet with the winners!! - An evening well spent

The awe of IIM inspires everyone. I am not the odd man out. I have always exclaimed, “What it takes to be in IIM? How do these people differ from us??” Every MBA aspirant in India would have raised these question at least once. But I was fortunate enough to meet two of the most successful IIM-A alumnus.

That Saturday evening was perfect in every way. With cool breeze from Marina, I was in Landmark, Citi centre for the second book launch, “Connecting the dots” by Rashmi Bansal. The launch was presided over by Orchid chemicals CEO, Mr. Raghavendra Rao and Hot Breads founder, Mr.Mahadevan.

Only by that afternoon I had finished Ms.Bansal’s first book, “Stay hungry and stay foolish. The achievements of those magnificent entrepreneurs made my way for attending a book launch, for the first time.

It was a different experience on its own. I was completely overwhelmed to be surrounded by people of an illustrious career and a magnanimous knowledge. When these persons spoke, they sounded humble and considerate, which people like us have to learn. Their persona clearly depicted that it was not lady luck that made them what they are today.

I was personally more influenced by Mr. Rao. He’s the man, who has built a $300 million pharma company out of his own passion and perseverance. This man just not inspires, but stimulate you to tread your own path. My heart beat harder and quicker just being beside him, speaking on my ideas and goals. That explains the awe I was in.

Follow your dream with passion. Go behind excellence. Success will follow you.

These were the simple words uttered by Aamir Khan in 3 idiots. These same words enthralled me then; but after confronting these SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS it has enslaved me. Such is their cloudless mind, dynamiting attitude and fired instinct.

I am glad that I met them and will always cherish their autographs and photographs; with my mind pursuing my dream incessantly as like them.
